What CHC theory is
Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory, usually shortened to CHC, is a psychometric framework for describing the structure of cognitive abilities. It brings together work associated with Raymond Cattell, John Horn, and John Carroll, whose models were related but not identical.
CHC is best understood as a taxonomy and family of models rather than one final diagram accepted in every detail. It helps researchers name abilities, compare findings, design batteries, and ask whether a test samples the domains needed for its intended use.
The framework is based largely on factor analysis of performance across many cognitive tasks. Factors summarize patterns of covariance; they do not imply that every named ability is a separate brain module.
The hierarchy of general, broad, and narrow abilities
Many presentations use three levels. At the top is a general factor representing variance shared across diverse cognitive tasks. The middle contains broad abilities. The lower level contains narrower abilities measured by more specific tasks.
Carroll called these levels strata. His three-stratum model included a general factor at Stratum III, broad factors at Stratum II, and numerous narrow factors at Stratum I. Horn's model placed more emphasis on multiple broad abilities and did not require a single general factor, which is one reason modern authors caution against treating CHC as one unanimously agreed structure.
A hierarchy does not mean that only the top score matters. The appropriate level depends on the question, quality of each score, and evidence supporting its interpretation.
Common broad abilities in CHC models
Frequently discussed broad abilities include fluid reasoning, comprehension-knowledge, short-term working memory, long-term storage and retrieval, visual processing, auditory processing, processing speed, and quantitative knowledge. Terminology and the number of broad abilities vary across versions.
Fluid reasoning concerns solving novel problems through induction, deduction, and quantitative reasoning. Comprehension-knowledge reflects acquired language, concepts, and culturally mediated knowledge. Visual and auditory processing describe operations on different forms of information, not the sharpness of eyesight or hearing itself.
Processing speed concerns efficient performance on relatively simple or overlearned tasks under time constraints. Working-memory constructs concern maintaining and manipulating limited information. These abilities overlap statistically and should not be read as isolated compartments.
How CHC influences intelligence tests
Test developers can use CHC to plan content coverage and evaluate whether subtests support intended broad composites. A battery may report an overall score, several index scores, and individual subtests, with evidence at each level differing in reliability and validity.
CHC terminology does not make scores from different publishers interchangeable. Two tests can use the same broad label while employing different tasks, norm samples, scoring models, and rules. Interpretation must follow the evidence and manual for the actual instrument.
Cross-battery interpretation attempts to combine evidence from multiple tests, but it requires professional competence and careful attention to norm compatibility, construct overlap, measurement error, and the risk of making too many comparisons.
Limits and responsible interpretation
Factor structures can vary across samples, ages, batteries, and analytic choices. Some models place g at the apex; others focus on correlated broad abilities. Researchers continue to study how psychometric factors relate to cognitive processes and neural systems.
An uneven score profile is not automatically a diagnosis or learning disorder. Subtest differences are common, smaller scores are often less precise, and clinical meaning depends on history, functioning, observations, and converging evidence.
